How merging in Preview actually works

macOS's Preview app can merge PDFs, but the workflow isn't obvious: open the first PDF, open the second in a separate Preview window, switch to thumbnail (sidebar) view in both, then drag the page thumbnails from one window into the other in the order you want them to appear. It works, but it's easy to drop a page in the wrong spot or lose track of which window is which once you're merging more than two files.
